New clinical trials on multiple sclerosis (MS), a disease whereby a patient’s immune system attacks their central nervous system, indicates that the disease can be induced into remission through a series of high-dose immunosuppressive therapy and transplant of a patient’s blood-forming stem cells. The treatment is now known as high-dose immunosuppressive therapy and autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (HDIT/HCT) and was seen to slow down the progression of disability in 69 percent of trial participants.
These tests were conducted by Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) under the funding of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The NIAID is a subdivision of the National Institutes of Health, the country’s medical research authority. The trials showed that a single therapy with HDIT/HCT was more effective compared to long run therapy with the best available medication for MS. The National researcher released the study’s three-year results towards the end of 2014.
This new HDIT/HCT treatment aims at controlling the disease by eliminating disease-causing cells and then readjusting the patient’s immune system. Doctors perform the procedure by collecting the patient’s blood-forming stem cells, suppressing the patient’s immune system by giving them a high dosage of chemotherapy and then reintroducing the blood-forming stem cells to restore the patient’s immune system. Five years after this treatment, most of the trial participants’ MS remained in remission, and their condition had stabilized.
